A dramatic white cross on a blue ground flies over the remains of Fast Castle on the Berwickshire coast like a metaphor for the times. Little remains of the castle which fell in and out of English and Scottish hands before falling into disrepair and ruin. It was one of the many castles in which Mary Queen of Scots spent time. And Sir Walter Scott found inspiration here for Wolf’s Crag in his novel, The Bride of Lammermoor.
The remoteness of Fast Castle Head provides a safe harbour for seals. Rocks and subterranean caves echo with the lamentation of pregnant mothers waiting to pup.
Further south in Eyemouth another flag flies, a wink and a nod to a different future in these post referendum days.
